Today, on December 1st, 2018, the swearing-in ceremony of the elected president of Mexico, Andres Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), took place at the Chamber of Deputies. The ceremony fortunately was carried out without any problems, and everything went as planned. This is a very important and historic event due to the fact that this is the first time in Mexican history, where a president is from the left-wing. From this day until 2024, AMLO is the constitutional president of the Mexican Republic and he begins his term called “The Fourth Transformation”.
The swearing-in ceremony is a process where the actual president gives the elected president the presidential band as a symbol of “letting the country in your hands”. Also is where the elected president swears to take good care of Mexico and to comply with all the promises he or she did in the presidential campaign. The ceremony counts with the presence of many representants from different countries all over the world. In this occasion people such as the King of Spain, the Vice-president of the USA and the General Governor of Canada attended the ceremony.
This ceremony was very different from the ones held in the past, because AMLO decided to modify certain aspects. One of them was the elimination of the “Presidential Senior State” who had the function of protecting the president and his or her family, instead he counted with the protection of the transit police. This caused the situation where citizens who were walking down the street managed to get near his car and gave compliments and flowers to him. Another element which was eliminated was the presence of the military as an extra protection. This was due to the statement of the Deputy’s Chamber president, Porfirio Muñoz Ledo, who said that they weren’t necessary.
Certainly, this swearing-in was very different as expected. More situations like this one will take place on the following years and the people in the country know that change is coming. However, uncertainty and fear shouldn’t stop us. Is it going to be hard? Yes, definitely. But as Mexicans the only thing we can do is to work for a better Mexico, and hope that our new president accomplishes the change he promised.
