“Alexander Zverev fends off Marin Cilic to seal opening ATP Finals victory” Evening Standard

Alexander Zverev has defeated the actual No. 1 player in the tennis world, Novak Djokovic. This happened some hours ago, at the ATP World Tour Finals, celebrated in London. It was a hard battle, full of sweat and blood, but at the end all the plays and exhaustion drops paid off for Zverev. This is the most important triumph of his tennis career, because he is the youngest player to achieve this title and the first German to win this tournament in 23 years.

For the record, the ATP World Tour, is a tennis season that takes place every year. In there, male athletes compete in different scenarios and countries to determine their positions in the world ranking. During these events, they obtain ranking points according to their performance. At the end, the world’s top 8 players compete for the last title of the season in the World Tour Finals. This event determines the year’s World Tour No. 1 player.

Before his triumph, he had won three Masters 1000 titles and reached the quarter-finals of a grand slam. However, this was a remarkable win for Zverev, due to the level of his opponent, this has been Djokovic’s year in tennis. He only lost 2 matches from 36 before playing against the German. Zverev also defeated Roger Federer on the semi-finals, becoming one of the few competitors to defeat consecutively this two players in a tournament.

From now on, what we can expect in the tennis world is to see ferocious battles between the Golden Generation and the New Generation. Every day and season that passes, new stars are born and the old are slowly retiring. However, this doesn’t mean that we forget the legacy that the titans Federer, Nadal and Djokovic left. Their way of playing will always be in our hearts. Nevertheless, the future is uncertain and a box full of surprises. That’s why we will have to wait till next season to see what Zverev has to show to us…
