Road damaged by the earthquake

Two 7.0 and 5.7 earthquakes shook Alaska this past Friday, November 30, and so far more than 190 aftershocks and a tsunami warning have been registered according to The United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Alaskan area affected.

The epicenter of the first earthquake, the most powerful, was recorded about 12 kilometers north of Anchorage, the USGS said. Minutes later, a replica of 5.7 was registered, followed by several smaller movements.

Several witnesses say that it was impossible to stand up and the movement did not stop which only worsened the situation

A large stretch of exit from a highway near the city's airport collapsed, leaving a car stranded by deep cracks in the ground. Several vehicles collided at a major intersection in Wasilla, north of Anchorage, during the earthquake.

There was also reported the collapse of several streets and highways including the Glenn Highway, a panoramic road that runs northeast between farms, mountains and glaciers. The exit from the city was in chaos during Friday afternoon.

The earthquake shattered windows, shelving objects, cracked openings in a two-story building in downtown Anchorage, disrupted electrical service and disabled traffic lights, causing traffic problems.

So far several injured are reported, but due to the fact that this earthquake happened just a few hours ago, it is still not known if people died and damages are still being recorded.

All flights at the airport were suspended after the earthquake cut telephone service and forced the evacuation of the control tower. Classes were canceled in Anchorage and parents were asked to pick up their children while authorities examined the schools for gas leaks and other damages. A convention center was set up in the city as an emergency shelter. People returned to the buildings after the first earthquake, but about five minutes later a replica of 5.7 made them go out into the streets again.
