On Saturday, November 3, NASA released an image taken by the Suomi NPP satellite on July 14, 2017 in which a red dot could be seen over the Atlantic Ocean. This dot, classified as a thermal anomaly, had no explanation until now, that possible explanations for this unusual phenomenon could be found.

This satellite identifies hundreds of thermal anomalies every night and most of these are caused by fires, but logically there are no fires in the middle of the ocean. This anomaly was found hundreds of kilometers away from the Brazilian coast, to such depth that it is impossible to consider a fire as its cause.

Another possible explanation is that the Infrared Visible Image Radiometer (VIIRS), led by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the United States, marks the eruptions of natural gas as anomalies; but after further investigation, it was concluded that natural gas eruptions occur at a shallow depth and near the coast, which is why this theory was rejected.

A third explanation talks of SAMA (South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly), "Areas with Van Allen radiation belts of the Earth, which are close to the surface at an altitude not exceeding 200 kilometers. These belts are regularly charged with energy, mostly solar attracted by a magnetic field “. This thermal anomaly would then be magnetic anomaly and would mean that this region of the Atlantic Ocean is exposed to radiation levels well above normal.

It is worth mentioning that the SAMA is a serious problem due to the high levels of radiation some specific satellites and spacecrafts are exposed to for several minutes while going through this area.

SAMA has been investigated for decades and still there are so many possible causes, explanations, and even consequences which we still don't know about.
